The study of human behavior and what compels us to perform certain actions when compared against another is something that has been going on since the beginning of time. Human personality types can tell us a lot about an individual and their natural behavior patterns which is why it’s so important for us to gain a clear perspective on all of the various personality groupings out there. One area of study where personality types take a front seat is Enneagram; Enneagram is a personality typing system that has been in use for many, many years. In fact some people say it’s roots reach as far back as into the ancient times!
The Enneagram system categorizes individuals into 9 main personality types based on their core motivations and fears. Enneagram has a very rich history that is the subject of dispute by many however it is commonly agreed upon that the practice holds it’s roots in the teachings of Claudio Naranjo and Oscar Ichazo. Enneagram has been used as a personality typing system by many different industries and all for very different reasons, however at the core, Enneagram is used to help individuals reach higher levels of enlightenment and being.
In total, there are 9 Enneagram Personality Types all of which have a base “Holy Idea” or general theme that serves as a basis for the main motivation of an individual with that personality type. The 9 Enneagram Personality types are as follows:
- Type 1 – Perfectionist/Reformer
- Type 2 – Giver/Helper
- Type 3 – Performer/Achiever
- Type 4 – Romantic/Individualist
- Type 5 – Observer/Investigator
- Type 6 – Loyal Skeptic/Loyalist
- Type 7 – Epicure/Enthusiast
- Type 8 – Protector/Challenger
- Type 9 – Mediator/Peacemaker
All of these personality types come with 6 separate personality identifying attributes which are categorized into the following: basic fear, basic desire, temptation, vice/passion, virtue, and ego fixation. These 6 personality identification characteristics will tell you a lot about an individual and what the primary motivating factors are in their life.
One of the unique aspects about the teachings of Enneagram is that all 9 personality types are represented in the figure of a Enneagram which is a geometrical shape. This illustration is done to provide a visual representation of one of the core beliefs of the practice which is that all 9 personality types are connected and intertwined in some way.
Enneagram is a very powerful personality typing and categorization practice that can be used to benefit you in multiple areas of life. We’ve all had moments where we’ve done something only to think about it 5 minutes later and ask ourselves the question “Why did I do that?” if you’re one of those people, you can find the answer to that question by simply taking the Enneagram personality test to see what key areas you fall into as it relates to your main personality characteristics.
To gain a true understanding of self, we must examine every intricate area of ourselves so that we can identify the root cause of whatever issues we may be dealing with. Enneagram serves as a method to find those answers by giving you a outline to follow for your own self-development.
